We are Sugarbear's Sweet Retreat Dog Boarding/Kennel LLC!
We opened our brand new modern kennel facility January 11th, 2024.
We are a family owned and operated dog boarding facility.
Owned by Randy and Jan Branton who prior to the time of the facilities construction decided to name the business after their then 14 year old Westie, Sugarbear.
Unfortunately our sweet and loving Sugarbear at age 15 passed over the Rainbow Bridge the day after Christmas 2023 just a couple weeks prior to our business opening.
We are nestled in the beautiful foothills of Western North Carolina in McDowell County.
We are located at 145 Brewer Drive, Marion, NC. Traveling I-40 to exit 85 then south onto US 221 southbound approximately 2 miles then right onto New Hope Way Rd, then straight onto Brewer Drive 2nd driveway on left.

Sugarbear's Sweet Retreat will be closed beginning Friday, December 19th to observe Christmas.
We will reopen on Friday, December 26th at 8:00 a.m.

Sugarbear's Sweet Retreat was state inspected on May 13th, 2025 at which time there were no discrepancies found.
Regardless of whether your dog weighs 5 lbs or 150 lbs, the rate remains the same. We have 19 kennels in four different sizes to accommodate dogs of all sizes in our spacious, beautiful new kennels.
We are licensed and inspected by the North Caroilina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. We adhere to and abide by all NC Animal Welfare Act Laws and Regulations.
At Sugarbear's Sweet Retreat, we are committed to providing the highest quality care for your dogs in a safe, secure, and healthy environment. We consider our facility to be one of the best in North Carolina. You will never smell urine or feces in our facility, thanks to our Polyaspartic flooring, which makes cleaning easier.
We clean every day, twice a day. Once a week, we completely sanitize each of the 19 kennels with a thorough spray-down procedure. Our outdoor exercise/play area flooring is also sealed for easy cleanup.
Our state-of-the-art facility also features a brand-new outdoor exercise/play area for your dogs to enjoy during their stay. Both the kennel facility and the outdoor area are monitored by security cameras, and the kennel facility is equipped with a security alarm system for all doors and windows.

We’re happy to share that Sugarbear’s Sweet Retreat will be open on a normal schedule throughout Thanksgiving Week! 🐶✨ Please note that holiday rates will apply during this period.
We recommend reserving your doggie’s stay early, as we filled up quickly last year and expect spots to go fast again!

Due to our workload we currently are not doing tours of our kennel facility. However a tour will be provided on the day of drop off for your dog(s) stay. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are experiencing a high number of occupants at this time.
Drop-Off & Pickup 🐕
To ensure smooth service, please note the following:
Drop-offs and pickups are available only between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
We kindly ask for a 30–60 minute notice before your arrival for both drop-off and pickup.
